On 5 July, Siemens announced that it was pulling out from bidding for the Crossrail rolling stock fleet. The company described it as a 'strategic decision… based on current business activity levels'. Two factors have contributed to the withdrawal. First, the award of the Thameslink total train service provision deal has slipped back, while the opening date for the 24 trains per hour service has, so far, been held at December 2018. Although requiring around 600 vehicles, compared with the 1,140 for Thameslink, Crossrail is still a large contract.
