The overhead wiring on the 15-mile'Phase 1 'section of the North West Electrification project was due to be energised at 00.01 on 1 August. Phase 1 stretches from Manchester to Golborne Junction on the West Coast main line via the Chat Moss route. Powering up was expected to enable testing and certification to be completed before the formal handover as an operational electrified route at the beginning of September.
