The £550 million project to rebuild Birmingham's New Street station came to fruition on Sunday 20 September when the doors to the new atrium and concourse opened to the public for the first time. Natural light now flows into the building and illuminates the concourse area, which is around five times the size of that at London's Euston station. The station is now wrapped in a reflective stainless-steel cloak, which presents a stunning external appearance. Included in the rebuilding is the provision of a new retail area, named 'Grand Central; which replaces the old Palisades shopping centre that had to be demolished to create the new atrium. 'Grand Central'surrounds the concourse and atrium on an upper level and consists of 60 retail units and food outlets, the star feature of which is a new 250,000 sq ft John Lewis store which opened four days after the concourse on 24 September.
