This is not the first time that the story of Crossrail has warranted a look beyond London but a cave 150 metres underground in Cheshire is surely one of the oddest locations yet to feature in Modern Railways' monthly Crossrail update. Detailed geological investigations have formed an essential part of the Crossrail enterprise so far and that brings with it the requirement to find somewhere to put all those soil and rock samples.The UK's largest salt mine in Winsford, Cheshire, answers this need by providing a natural, climate-controlled storage facility. It has proved ideal for storing the thousands of soil and rock cores collected from beneath London.
