GREEN LIGHTS FOR ALSTOM/GE DEAL

The European commission (EC) has approved the takeover by General Electric of Alstom's Energy businesses. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has also filed a proposed consent decree that would permit the acquisition to close. Alstom says the sale will allow it to focus on its Transport business and to pursue'an ambitious growth strategy'. GE reports that the transaction will be completed as early as possible in the fourth quarter of 2015. The EC approval is conditional on a segment of Alstom's heavy duty gas turbine business being divested to Ansaldo Energia. GE is also to divest Alstom's Power Systems Manufacturing business, helping to allay concerns raised by both the EC and the DoJ. GE says it is close to finalising a deal to divest these assets to Ansaldo and that this transaction is expected to close after the closing of the GE/Alstom transaction, subject to required regulatory approvals.
