Redevelopment of the rail station at Gatwick Airport is to go ahead, even if the government does not give the go-ahead for a new runway. The £120.5 million scheme for the station will provide a new concourse two and a half times the size of the existing one. The airport has provided £30 million of funding for the scheme, which it says will transform the passenger experience at the station. Guy Stevenson, the airport's Chief Commercial Officer, told the New Civil Engineer UK Rail Conference that the airport is aiming to increase the amount of air travellers arriving by public transport from its current 42% to 60%. He added that its rail share now stands at a record 36%, which it aims to grow to 50%.
