WEST MIDLANDS SRFI PROPOSED

Plans have been unveiled for a new strategic rail freight interchange (SRFI) located in the West Midlands next to the railway between Wolverhampton and Stafford. The proposed location is a 250-hectare site west of junction 12 of the M6, near the village of Four Ashes. Developers say the area was identified in 2007 as one of the best locations in the region for an SRFI, due to its road and rail access that would allow 9ft 6in containers to come in by rail on conventional flatbed wagons. The site would include six to eight million square feet of warehousing and associated development, and developers say it could create between 6,500 and 8,500 new jobs. The development is being promoted by Four Ashes Ltd, a consortium led by Kilbride Holdings in conjunction with property company Grosvenor Group, which is providing funding.
