This year alone, Knouse Foods will process more than 11 million bushels of apples for its Musselman's apple sauce and Luck Leaf brand apple food and beverage products. As a food processor, Knouse has to adhere to strict quality standards, and there's no room for compromise when subjected to rigid USDA and FDA inspections. One of its most serious and potentially costly problems is insect infiltration. "Regulatory agencies are getting tougher in order to ensure safe, high quality food," says Bob Snader, maintenance manager at Knouse's 500,000-square-foot processing plant in Chambersburg, Pa. A tight seal around the doors is not negotiable when it comes to preventing infiltration by unwanted pests, Snader explains.
