Warehouse control system (WCS) solutions are evolving, both upward into the order-handling domain of warehouse management system (WMS) software, and outward to include more types of wearables, robotics and sensors seeing use in distribution centers. Originally, WCS grew out of the need to coordinate the material flow between major types of automated systems such as conveyors, sorters and pick-to-light systems. Now a new breed of WCS solutions-dubbed warehouse execution systems (WES)-have entered the market, taking on some higher-level fulfillment challenges.
