The manager of a major paper products manufacturer's plant has increased his company's operating efficiency and reduced the need for temporary employees. The means? A new automatic guided vehicle system (AGVS) has swiftly taken over the task of moving, on demand, pallets of paper products from the production facility to the warehouse building next door. In this operation, the product flow is quite variable. Some pallets are filled to capacity while others are barely loaded as dictated by the order size. The inconsistent condition of full pallets vs. light pallets had greatly reduced productivity.
