摘要

Traditionally, most assembly operations are sequenced in a long line. Just ask Henry Ford. And that legacy is right where problems begin. A long assembly line has several drawbacks, according to Bruce Tompkins, a principal at Tompkins Associates (919-855-5527, www.tompkinsinc.com). It requires considerable space, and tends to acquire excess inventory line-side. And there is usually little visibility station-to-station and even less teamwork, Tompkins says.
