Re-mapping Algeria(s) in France: Leïla Sebbar's Mes Algéries en France and Journal de mes Algéries en France

摘要

This article investigates the ways in which textual and visual re-territorialisation are negotiated in Leïla Sebbar's Mes Algéries en France and Journal de mes Algéries en France, via the layering of personal and historical memory and the superimposition of past and present that is at the core of the relationship between text and image in this work. Using an interrogatory framework which sets theories of autobiography and remembrance in dialogue with critical responses to the power of visual culture and the collective nature of suffering, the analysis explores how the texturing of the relationship between text and image breaks down opposing notions of coloniser/colonised, the authorial ‘I’ and the Algerian ‘other’, and ultimately re-maps a plurality of ‘Algerias’ in France through the multiple identities, spaces, and versions of the Algerian histoire that attempt to re-construct a community out of exile and a collective memory from personal nostalgia. Cet article examine la façon dont Leïla Sebbar entreprend une re-térritorialisation textuelle et visuelle dans Mes Algéries en France et Journal de mes Algéries en France, et ceci à travers la fusion d'une mémoire personnelle et la mémoire historique, et par la superposition du présent et du passé qui est au cœur de la relation entre texte et images dans cette œuvre. Utilisant une structure interrogative qui met des théories de l'autobiographie et de la commémoration en relation avec des réponses critiques au pouvoir de la culture visuelle et à la nature collective de la souffrance, l'analyse examine la façon dont le mariage entre texte et images fond des notions opposées du colonisateur et du colonisé, du ‘je’ narrateur et de ‘l'autre’ algérien, pour finalement retracer une pluralité d'‘Algéries’ en France à travers les identités et espaces multiples, et les diverses versions de l'histoire algérienne, qui visent à reconstruire une communauté sortie de l'exile et une mémoire collective sortie de la nostalgie personnelle.
