摘要

Stub terminals were once found in many cities across North America, but they weren't very efficient if more than a few daily trains used them. Their track arrangement trapped incoming locomotives and head-end cars at the bumper. This extended the walk into the station for arriving passengers, and first class passengers (from the sleeping cars at the rear of the train) had the longest hike. Some stub terminals had a couple of arrival tracks connected with an escape crossover about an engine length from the bumper. The idea here is the train would stop at a marked clearance point so the road engine could be uncoupled. Then the locomotive could pull forward and use the escape crossover to head for the engine terminal. The problem was this arrangement increased the hike into the station, and the rails crossing a passenger platform were a tripping hazard.
