Geoff Sheppard: CEng MIMechE MRAeS 18 June 1936 - 27 March 2013

Long established readers of this magazine will know that Geoff was Editor for seven years during many changes and improvements, including the move to monthly publication. I was working with Ted Jolliffe on Model Engineer magazine at the publisher's Heme Hempstead offices when Geoff arrived in 1994. We immediately recognised in one another a kindred spirit which soon developed into a great friendship. In Geoff's own words published in 2001, we consulted on an almost daily basis, bounced ideas off one another, checked facts or just communicated on the unfairness of the world! At that time, printing involved film prepared by a pre-press house in Chesham. The film had to be checked before the magazine could be passed for press. Geoff lived in Bristol and it soon became routine for him to stay overnight with us and deal with editorial matters the following day. Geoff and I both enjoyed good ale, so we would usually visit a local hostelry after dinner. It was during these sessions that our friendship developed while we discussed matters of common interest and set the world to rights.
