Beginning in 1995, a whole new class of high-capacity diskette products was introduced, first by Iomega and later by Imation. These products offered 100MB or more of storage capacity, 70-80 times the capacity of the standard micro-floppy disk. The drives, even when first introduced, were attractively priced, selling at retail for less than $200, and the diskettes used, while certainly not inexpensive at $19.95 each, were low enough in cost to overcome user resistance. Since 1995, upwards of 17 million high-capacity diskette drives have been shipped by their several producers, and Iomega had just announced the shipment of the 100 millionth "ZIP" diskette as this issue of the Newsletter was being prepared.
