Looking in from the Outside — Some Further Observations on Media Producers in 2004, and Their Likely Positions in 2005 and Thereafter

One by one, the companies that have been the strongest factors in the recording media Industry for the past 30 years are either leaving the field altogether or being forced to adapt to changing times by developing and introducing new ways to record and store information, music, video, and data. At the same time, companies that until recently have never been active in the recording media industry have suddenly become major factors. Although MMIS has no special relationship with any of the companies, old or new, now active in the recording media industry, we have worked with many of them for a long enough time to form opinions on where they stand in the industry today and where they may stand in five years time. We are of course looking in on them from the outside, and cannot possibly know of ail of their plans, problems, and programs. However, we believe it is useful occasionally to offer our opinions and comments on the key companies in this industry, if for no other reason than to give their managements a look at how people on the outside view them. MMIS' opinions are molded by direct contact with the companies to be discussed, by the products they offer (or fail to offer), and by the many comments, inputs and hard data we receive about them from others in the field.
