Higher pay for care workers 'will boost economy'

Increasing pay for adult social care workers can support local economies, boost recruitment and retention, and improve care, according to a new report. The Living Wage Foundation campaign group found 73% of care workers in England were paid less than the Living Wage of £9.50 per hour and earn £8.50 per hour on average. More than half of domiciliary care workers and 24% in the sector as a whole work on zero-hours contracts. The foundation advocates going further than the Government's national living wage of £8.91 an hour, which is based on median earnings, and pay £9.50 per or £10.50 in London - a level 'calculated according to what people need to make ends meet'. Its report read: 'Good, well-paid jobs in social care will help tackle unemployment challenges and support local economies, particularly in areas of the UK where there is a growing demand for, but lack of care services.'
