Brum praised for financial improvement

Birmingham City Council - once on the brink of financial collapse -has been praised for improvements in its financial management. A report by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy found the council's accounting was now 'exemplary'. The finance body has upped its rating of the council to three stars out of a possible five. The report read: 'Birmingham City Council has made great strides in addressing the issues that constrained overall financial management capability. ' It would be our considered view that Birmingham City Council should be considered to be an exemplar in the transformation of financial management capability given the extent of improvement achieved over the last two years.' The report follows a tumultuous few years for the council, which has gone through a series of chief executives, and worked with a Government-appointed improvement panel and council-appointed non-executive advisers.
