Government tries to save Melton project

The Government this week made a last-ditch attempt to rescue the planned £35m southern leg of the Melton Mowbray distributor road. Senior Leicestershire CC councillors had been poised to turn down £15m of Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) cash at a meeting on Tuesday because they believed the project represented 'too great a financial risk'. But the agenda item was deferred after the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government offered to work with the council to address its concerns and bring the scheme into contract. Leicestershire would have had to find an additional £20m to fund the road, as well as £35m of new school provision. It believed there was a 'reasonable chance' that the £55m would be 'fully recoverable' from developers over a period of up to 20 years but wanted Melton BC, which makes decisions on Section 106 funding, to underwrite any shortfall.
