Last week, at the AGM of the Association of County Chief Executives (ACCE), it was my privilege to be nominated by my colleagues to succeed Anthony May as chair for the next two years. It has been a year like no other, but ably led by Anthony, my fellow chief executives have built up a closer relationship with the Government and civil servants, forged on mutual respect. We in local government have shown what we can do when we get the bit between our teeth, being able to respond to many challenges. The strengthened relationships nationally, 1 also believe, are mirrored locally with our partners such as district councils. This more proactive approach to collaboration on policy development and implementation can be applied to many of the agendas coming our way. With better contacts made, the foundations are in place.
