The Government has knocked back calls from councils to extend payments to people forced to self-isolate due to COVID-19. Pressure has grown from the sector for changes to the scheme, under which people on low incomes who cannot work from home are paid £500. Concerns have mounted over people refusing to keep to the restrictions because they cannot afford to go without pay and spreading the disease as a result. Chief executives' group Solace said it had 'repeatedly' raised the 'lack of support on offer' due to 'limited funding' and 'strict eligibility criteria'. At least one region's gold command has asked the Government to reconsider how much it pays people to self-isolate.
