The people of Britain aren't generally inclined to get too emotional about things. But if there's one topic that's more certain than most to bring a tear to the eye of any British person it's the closure of pubs. Diary would almost be unsurprised to learn that the right to drink decent beer in your community was a fundamental British right enshrined in the Magna Carta. A new report from the think-tank Localis published this week acknowledged the importance of pubs. And Localis chief executive, Jonathan Werran, cheekily admitted: 'This is by far the most personal Localis research project I've been involved in.' With Al Murray - aka The Pub Landlord - failing to drum up much business in lockdown maybe there's an opportunity for him to branch out into local government think-tankery. Northampton BC will soon be no more as it is swallowed up into the new West Northamptonshire Council.
