Local government's reputation has suffered in recent weeks, and I would be surprised if anyone sought to deny it. Icelandic banks and child protection appear together in this sentence only to reflect a link which has been made elsewhere. Commentators and others with no love for local authorities have not held back. Unsurprisingly, we have also seen an increasing frequency of critical stories of the PC variety, from the always-fertile territories of waste collection, job titles and advertisements, and the recognition and celebration of Christmas by councils.
