None of us were around in 1893 but it was a momentous year for local government - the launch of The MJ ,or Municipal Journal as it was then called (actually, to be pedantic it was originally called London and only covered the capital's local government for the first couple of years of its life). The reason I mention this barely-known fact is that unusually we delved into our archives last week when researching pictures for the article on women in local government written by local government secretary Hazel Blears (see p15). Ms Blears, flagging up International Women's Day this week, mentioned that Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was elected the first female mayor in England in Aldeburgh, Suffolk in November 1908. A quick search through The MJ's archives uncovered an entire page coverage on her elevation (reproduced on p15), a sure sign that the journal even then appreciated the enormity of the event.
