The crisis in social care will deepen as funding fails to keep pace with the needs of the ageing population, putting more pressure on overstretched local authorities, according to a report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). Spending on social care fell by 1% from 2010 to 2016 as the population aged over 65 rose by nearly 16%, leaving a funding gap that was likely to get worse, the IFS said. The report says: 'The cumulative cut between 2010 and 2020 is likely to increase. Overall, it looks very challenging for councils to maintain per-adult social spending at current levels.'
