摘要

If there's one lesson we can take from the political upheavals of recent years, it's that Britain is increasingly divided - and nowhere is it more evident than in our cities. This is the central theme of Cities Outlook 2018, the Centre for Cities' annual health-check on UK urban economies. It examines the growing disparities between different cities in terms of political leanings, living standards, and economic performance - and the implications these have for their economic prospects.Take politics, for example. At the EU referendum, there was a clear dislocation between small and medium sized cities in the North and Midlands - which largely voted for Brexit - and bigger cities and those further south which mostly favoured staying in the EU. Similar divisions were seen in the last General Election, with Labour consolidating its support in major cities but the Tories seeing a surprising swing in many Labour urban heartlands.
