Scots authorities spend £3m to lessen impact of spare room subsidy

Local authorities in Scotland have spent £3m more than originally predicted last year to mitigate the impact of the 'bedroom tax'. Figures released by the Scottish Government show that councils spent £50.5m on discretionary housing payments to top up benefits, which had been cut by the spare room subsidy in 2014/15. Ministers at Holyrood originally thought councils would need £47.2m to cover the cuts. 'Using the new powers coming to Scotland, the Scottish Government will abolish the bedroom tax as soon as possible,' said Scottish housing minister, Margaret Burgess.
