Council chiefs told of tougher fire safety stance

Council chief executives have been told about the Government's tougher stance on building regulations and fire safety in the wake of the Grenfell fire tragedy.The letter from Whitehall's director general for local government and public services, Dr Jo Farrar, came a day after last week's final report by Dame Judith Hackitt, who called for wholesale reform of the monitoring and safety of high-risk residential buildings (HRRBs).Dr Farrar wrote: 'The Hackitt review has shown that in too many cases people who should be accountable for fire safety have failed in their duties.'In future, the Government will ensure that those responsible for a building must demonstrate they have taken decisive action to reduce building safety risks and will be held to account.'
