Championing the community

Like councils up and down the country, Cambridgeshire CC faces serious challenges over the next decade. With this in mind, the council and its partners embarked on some pioneering and innovative community engagement to help take pressures off services. One of these approaches was the groundbreaking Time Credits scheme. Cambridgeshire CC's community engagement team had reduced in size in recent years. To remain effective it had to change the way it operated. The council said: 'We knew we could make better use of assets, both in the community and across public services. We wanted to embed community development principles and ways of working more widely across Cambridgeshire. We also wanted to encourage volunteering for all age groups and enable people to give time to their communities in a wide range of ways.'
