Pensions pooling may save £300m

Pooling local government pension schemes into around six different funds could save up to £300m a year, according to a new report. The report by Project POOL, a working group of 24 local authority funds and consultants Hyman Robertson, recommended about half a dozen multi-asset pools made up of between 10 and 12 pension funds. Speaking to The MJ, Hymans Robertson's head of public sector, John Wright, said the six pooled funds would achieve the 'twin benefits' of greater economies of scale while retaining local accountability. Mr Wright said the pooled funds could save up to £300m a year from their combined running costs within 10 years of being formed. 'The Government has asked for the plans to be sufficiently ambitious,' said Mr Wright. 'By working together on Project POOL, we have been able to measure current costs and quantify potential savings.'
