The Government could intervene in more councils after seeing 'clear evidence of improvements' from sending in commissioners to Tower Hamlets LBC and Rotherham MBC. Local government minister Marcus Jones this week failed to rule out further Whitehall intervention in failing authorities, admitting 'several' were on the department's watch list. The MJ understands the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has a dedicated monitoring unit keeping tabs on councils at risk of failure. Despite lengthy interrogation by the Communities and Local Government Committee, Mr Jones was reluctant to reveal the number of authorities under DCLG observation.
