Council chief restarts debate on unitaries

The leader of Cheshire East Council has re-ignited the unitary debate in his region by calling for the county to be brought back together. Cheshire was split into two authorities in the last round of local government reorganisation in 2009, but last week Cllr Michael Jones made a surprise call to bring Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester councils back together again. Cllr Jones said the 2009 move was a 'bad decision and the people weren't behind it'. 'What I'm calling for today is a review of our separated and divided local government, as I set out my ambition for a unified Cheshire Council that serves the needs of all Cheshire residents,' said Cllr Jones.
