摘要

Most politicians leave politics unwillingly, rejected by the electorate. Some leave voluntarily, either because they dislike the life of an MP or because their progression up the ministerial slippery pole is blocked. Very few leave at the peak of their political career, but one who has is former foreign secretary and Conservative leader William Hague who stepped down as Cabinet minister and MP in May after 26 years in politics. His first major speaking slot after the May elections was to present The MJ Awards last week to 900 guests, interspersing winners' announcements with anecdotes of political life.
