Older volunteers plug care gap

More than five million volunteers aged over 60-years-old are helping to plug the gaps in social care services, according to a national charity. Research by the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) has claimed 40% of people aged over 60 are now volunteering for one or more charity, and the average age of a volunteer is now 63. Speaking to The MJ, the head of policy at the RVS, Steve Smith, said volunteers 'can add real value and complement the work of professional medical practitioners'.
