I felt slightly underwhelmed by communities secretary Eric Pickles' '50 ways to save' published in December. I hoped the list might be a source of inspiration, but soon realised that many of the points were initiatives most local authorities would already have in place, or would be in the process of developing. One point which fell particularly short of the mark was Number 36: 'Earn more from private advertising".
