NEET numbers drop to lowest since records began

The number of young people aged 16 to 24 deemed not to be in education, employment or training (NEET) has decreased by 118,000 in the last 12 months, statisticians have reported. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on 22 May revealed there were 975,000 young people in the NEET category in the UK- representing 13.5% of this age cohort, in the first quarter of 2014. This also marked a 61,000 decrease, equivalent to a further 0.8%, in NEET numbers from fourth quarter 2014 figures. '1 am particularly pleased to see that the proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds who are NEET, is at the lowest level since records began,' said enterprise and skills minister, Matthew Hancock.
