Reserves increase 36% in five years

Town hall treasurers have increased local authority reserves by 36% over five years, swelling council coffers to just under ￡13bn, the Audit Commission has reported. According to Striking a balance, a commission study into councils' use of financial reserves, published on 6 December, more than three-quarters (77%) of authorities saw their reserves increase relative to their spending between 2007 and 2012.
