Huge Southern Cross loss soarks concerns

Fresh fears for the future of beleaguered care home operator, Southern Cross Healthcare, have been raised, after the firm announced a pre-tax loss of £310m. The operator posted an operating loss of £6.8m for the six months to 31 March, and a pretax loss of £310.9m - which includes an accounting write-off of £267.8m on previous purchases and property. The company has been meeting with its landlords in an attempt to defer some of its rent payments over the summer months. The statement warned that if the landlords agreed to the cut, the company would have enough money to operate until the end of June.
