Local government minister, Bob Neill, this week came under fire for describing the £140bn Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) as 'unsustainable', ahead of Treasury-approved talks with trade unions on the future of the retirement plan. The GMB trade union representing local authority staff said Mr Neill - who is effectively the LGPS regulator - had been 'irresponsible' in using such language ahead of talks designed to ensure an affordable retirement plan remained a key tenet of local government's benefits package.
