I am writing this at the conclusion of the LGA Group annual conference -traditionally the largest and most important gathering for leaders of the local government sector in the UK. It is intended to set and reflect the sector's priorities, as well as showcasing best practice, innovations and policy initiatives, in the context of local political leadership.I must confess to being concerned prior to the conference this year. In this age of rapid change and austerity, I thought there must be public criticism for holding the event at all. I anticipated that delegate numbers might be down, presenters and exhibitors could withdraw and, above all, the mood might be one of doom and gloom.
