Slump in social housing numbers

The number of homes built for social rent last year slumped to a fifth of the level seen a decade ago. Just 6,463 social rent homes were built in England in 2017/18, compared to around 30,000 10 years ago.Figures released by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) show that although the number of affordable homes built rose 12% last year to 47,355, the vast majority of those built for rent - 26,838 - were classed as ‘affordable' rather than ‘social'.
