Professor George Jones, a passionate advocate of local government and long-term contributor to The MJ, has died aged 79. He was emeritus professor of government at the London School of Economics (LSE), a post he had held since 2003. A man of both fierce intelligence and enormous compassion, Professor Jones defended the independence of local government from Whitehall for decades and advocated the extension of powers to localities, including tax-raising powers and the right of councils to determine their own spending priorities.
