Happy local election day! With the nation going to the polls - or at least a bit of the nation - it is a good moment to reflect on democracy. As Katie Ghose, of the Electoral Reform Society, points out in this week's MJ, local election turnout has only topped 40% once in nearly a decade so just how much of a response should we expect? Directly-elected mayors were once viewed as the great hope to breathe life back into local government but instead it seems democracy is still gasping.
