Calls have been made for Smith Square to expel councils that refuse to engage with sector-led improvement as chief executives move to toughen their own approach. The Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) said it was 'exploring what mechanisms might be required' to engrain its ethics code into membership of the organisation. SOLACE director Graeme McDonald told The MJ he thought the 'strong, ultimate sanction' of withdrawing membership was an appropriate way of ensuring high standards in local public services. In contrast, the Local Government Association (LGA) has resisted calls to throw out members that refuse to have a regular peer review - and it has no legal powers to enforce reviews.
