'Essential' gagging clauses defended by council chiefs

Chief executives have defended so-called gagging clauses in compromise agreements after a Labour backbencher called for their use to be investigated. John McDonnell MP said the use of compromise agreements in the public sector seemed to 'undermine the structures and procedures we put in place for whistleblowing'. But director of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, Graeme McDonald, insisted the use of compromise agreements was 'appropriate'.
