A leading think-tank has called for councils to be given money from citizenship fees to help promote community cohesion. In a report published on 20 October, the IPPR called on the Government to create a Settlement Support Fund, partly funded by citizenship fees and also a levy on visa fees, to help areas facing the greatest pressure from immigration. The IPPR also recommended councils promoted activities, which encourage groups to break down barriers, such as Newham LBC's commitment to help fund some community events. 'The Government and local authorities have a duty to promote integration and many are failing to do so,' said Newham LBC mayor, Sir Robin Wales. 'We all have a part to play in ensuring that people are able to engage positively in society and with one another.'
