Minister disputes claim £1.14bn needed to fund care in London

Care minister Norman Lamb has disputed claims by London Councils that boroughs in the capital will need to find an extra £1.14bn to fund adult social care. The local government organisation warned on 25 November that the new system, which includes a cap of £72,000 for individual social care costs, will cost them an extra £738m by 2019/20 on top of their existing costs.London Councils also estimates that demograph ic pressures and inflation will add another £399m to that bill.'We do not recognise these figures,' said Mr Lamb. 'We are providing an additional £335m in 2015/16 to specifically cover the costs of bringing in our cap on care costs and our deferred payments scheme for people in residential care.
