Female employees of Birmingham City Council have advanced their campaign for equal pay compensation, after an employment appeal tribunal in London found in their favour. If successful, the low-paid women can claim up to six years' back pay. Birmingham City Council had challenged many women's claims on three main technical points. These included, in a move with national implications, contesting permission for several thousand women employed in community schools to compare wages with men employed in jobs of equal value elsewhere for the council.
