Cumbria CC is set to face the biggest pay-out so far, after becoming the latest victim of the costly equal-pay crisis sweeping Britain's councils. The North West authority has lost out to almost 3,000 of its employees in a tribunal and faces an estimated £50m bill. It follows 11 North East councils which have fallen foul of the 30-year-old Equal Pay Act, and had to fork out more than £100m to compensate women workers for past pay inequalities.
