I am not reaEy one for TV reality shows -I would much rather an episode of The Wire or West Wing than an X Factor or The Apprentice. But even I, far removed from such populist programming, cannot fail to have spotted the events of Strictly Come Dancing. Ann Widdicombe and her partner Anton Du Beke were at one point riding high, their 'entertainment value' proving hugely popular with the voting public. This entertainment value derived from a heady cocktail of their specific talents. On the one hand, we had Anton's expertise in dancing and also choreographing routines that minimised any exposure of Ann's dancefloor limitations; on the other hand, we had Ann's 'pantomime' contribution to each routine, and caustic repartee with the judges.
